Predicting seismic response of structures and manufactured products is important to reduce or prevent serious injury to occupants and bystanders, and the destruction of structures and products. New design of structures and products, as well as existing structures and products, should be analyzed for seismic response, if they are to exist in geographic regions of significant seismic activity.

A seismic analysis may be based on appropriate building codes, or may be based on sophisticated numerical analysis procedures (finite element analysis procedures) that account for the vibration characteristics of the structure or product, and how they may couple with the dynamics of the design seismic event.
